Cortland sits at roughly 1,100 feet in elevation in the hills south of Syracuse. Winters here are longer and colder on average, and wind exposure from the surrounding hills is pronounced. The city averages around 80 inches of snow annually, and the combination of elevation, wind, and freeze-thaw cycles can accelerate wear on windows, doors, and roofing.

Elevation Changes the Climate Equation

Cortland is colder and windier than Syracuse, which means that heating degree days are meaningfully higher, wind exposure from the surrounding Finger Lakes hills is significant, and the thermal penalty of a poorly sealed window or door here is larger than in the metro.

Pre-War and Post-War Houses

Much of Cortland’s residential core was built before 1960. The neighborhoods near SUNY Cortland, along Tompkins Street, and in the North and South Hill areas contain a high concentration of homes from the 1910s through the 1950s. Original or very early replacement windows are common, and air infiltration in these homes is typically severe when tested.

About 80 Inches of Snow Per Year

Cortland’s elevated position in the Finger Lakes hills means it receives more snowfall than Syracuse, despite being farther from Lake Ontario. Heavy and repeated snow loads stress roofing and contribute to ice dam formation along eaves, particularly on older homes without adequate attic insulation and air sealing at the ceiling plane.

My home was built in the 1940s. What should I be looking at in terms of home improvement or energy savings?

For a 1940s Cortland home, windows and air sealing are almost always the highest-priority items. Homes from this era at this elevation typically show severe infiltration when tested properly, driven by original or very early replacement windows, rim joist bypasses, and door frames that have shifted significantly over 80-plus years of freeze-thaw cycling. A blower door test is the most efficient first step, as it quantifies the overall problem, identifies the worst sources, and provides the data needed to unlock NYSERDA incentive funding.

Does Cortland's elevation actually affect which products you recommend?

Yes, and it matters. Cortland sits in a meaningfully colder, windier climate zone than the Syracuse metro area. We pay close attention to window frame material durability and thermal performance ratings, to door threshold and perimeter seal specifications, and to how products are installed at the edges where high wind will probe for any weakness. A product that performs adequately at 400 feet elevation in Syracuse may be marginal at Cortland’s elevation. We account for that in our recommendations.

Are the NY State grant programs available in Cortland?

Yes. NYSERDA and EmPower NY rebates & incentives are available statewide.

Cortland homeowners qualify on exactly the same terms as anyone else in New York. We review eligibility at your free estimate visit at no charge, and we have helped Cortland families access all of these programs.

What is Roof Maxx, and is it right for my home?

Roof Maxx is a safe, all-natural, bio-oil treatment that restores flexibility to brittle asphalt shingles, effectively extending roof life by 5 years per treatment, renewable up to three times for 15 years total. It is best suited to roofs with structural integrity, but that are losing their flexibility and granules with age. We assess suitability during our assessment. It’s not appropriate for every roof, and we will tell you honestly if your roof needs replacement instead.

What makes you different from other home improvement companies in Central New York?

A few things set us apart. We provide you with a firm written price before any work begins. We proactively identify every grant and incentive you may qualify for. And we back our work with a lifetime limited warranty on both products and labor. We are also genuinely a local company: our office is in Syracuse, our people live here, and our reputation depends on the work we do in this community.
