My home had its windows replaced in the 1980s. Is it time again?
Quite possibly. First-generation insulated glass sealed units from the 1980s are now 35 to 45 years old. The most visible sign of failure is fogging or haziness between the panes, which indicates the insulating gas has escaped. But even units that look clear may have lost significant thermal performance as the spacer seals have degraded. We assess each window individually, and give you a window-by-window recommendation rather than a blanket replacement pitch.
Does living near Onondaga Lake affect my home’s windows or roofing?
Yes, in a few ways. Elevated lakeside humidity accelerates the degradation of weatherstripping, window seals, and door frames. Homes close to the water also tend to experience more frequent freeze-thaw cycling in shoulder seasons, which puts more stress on roofing and can contribute to ice damming along eaves. If your home is on or near the lakeshore, we factor that in when assessing what products and installation methods are most appropriate.
